French Press Brew Guide
The French press offers a rich, full-bodied cup that captures the coffee's depth and texture. This method allows the natural oils to remain in the brew, creating a heavier mouthfeel and a grounded, satisfying profile.
What You’ll Need
- French press
- Freshly ground coffee
- Kettle
- Scale (recommended)
- Spoon
- Mug
Coffee to Water Ratio
We recommend a 1:16 ratio
Example for a single cup French Press:
- 20g coffee
- 300g water
This ratio brings out a full, balanced cup with depth and structure.
Grind Size
Use a coarse grind, similar to breadcrumbs.
This helps prevent over-extraction and keeps the cup clean while maintaining body.
Water Temperature
Heat water to about 200°F (just off boil).
Step-by-Step Instructions to Brew with a French Press
1. Add Coffee
Add your ground coffee to the French press.
2. Bloom
Start your timer and pour enough water to evenly saturate the grounds.
Let it sit for 30–45 seconds as the coffee releases gas.
3. Fill and Stir
Continue pouring the remaining water, then gently stir to ensure all grounds are fully immersed.
4. Steep
Place the lid on the press with the plunger pulled up.
Let the coffee steep for 4 minutes.
5. Press
After steeping, slowly and evenly press the plunger down.
Final Touch
Pour immediately and enjoy. Letting the coffee sit in the press can lead to over-extraction.
Brewing Tips
- Use a coarse, consistent grind to avoid sediment in the cup
- Stir gently — over-agitation can introduce bitterness
- Adjust steep time slightly to refine body and strength
- Serve right away for the most balanced expression of the coffee
