Coffee to Water Ratio
We recommend a 1:16 ratio. 1 gram of coffee per 16ml of water, or if you don't have a scale, use 2tbsp of coffee for every cup of water.
Example ratio for a single cup Hario V60 pour over:
- 25g coffee
- 400ml/g water
This ratio produces a balanced cup and can be adjusted slightly to suit your taste.
Grind Size
Use a medium grind, similar to sea salt.
A consistent grind supports even extraction and a smooth finish.
Water Temperature
Heat water to about 200°F (just off boil).
Step-by-Step Instructions for a Hario V60 Pour Over
1. Prepare the Filter
Place the paper filter in your dripper and rinse thoroughly with hot water. This removes any paper taste and warms the brewer. Discard the rinse water.
2. Add Coffee
Add your ground coffee to the filter and gently shake to level the bed.
3. Bloom
Start your timer and pour just enough water to fully saturate the grounds, about 2–3 times the weight of the coffee.
Let it sit for 30–45 seconds as the coffee expands and releases gas.
4. Continue Pouring
Pour slowly in a steady, circular motion, keeping the water level consistent. Aim to pour in stages (pulses), allowing the water to draw down slightly between pours. Avoid pouring directly along the edges of the filter.
5. Finish the Brew
Total brew time should be 3:00–3:30 minutes. Once the water has fully drained, remove the dripper.
Final Touch
Give your coffee a gentle swirl before serving. This helps integrate the layers of extraction for a balanced cup.
